Pencil vs. Boredom: Chapter 1

Chapter 1

*Most likely in the present, was a girl named Yumi. See, Yumi was your average introverted girl with anxiety, and that’s pretty much it.* 

As Yumi was sketching little doodles in her notebook, she heard the intercom say, “Yumi to office, Yumi the office.” Mrs. Yoisaki said to pack up her things. Yumi raised an eyebrow, since she had no idea what this was about. 

Was this about what Tsukasa and Akito made me do when he pushed me into the planter and blamed everything on me? Did they really buy a lie from some dumb pushover? Confused, Yumi took a deep breath and opened the door to see her mother Airi as a surprise. Vice principal Asahina was sitting in her chair, typing on her computer. 

“Mom? What’s going on?” 

“Oh Honey…I wish I told you sooner but…We’re moving…Tommorow…please…I see you have your bag…please give it to me…” 

“Wha-?!” Yumi handed her bag to her mom knowing that arguing was pointless. She walked back to class with a mild migraine.

The next day she gave her best friend, Emu, a giant hug in tears. 

“Please wait for me, I’ll be back, I swear!” They waved goodbye as Yumi walked away sobbing, face red. The moment Airi stepped into the airport, she turned around to her daughter.

“April fools!” 

“UWAH-…HUH?!?!” Yumi realised just how terrifying her mother really was. 

“All we need to do is move back closer, so you will be at the same school, okay?”

“M-MOM…DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW INSANE THAT IS?!”

“Well…the house was getting pretty old…so I was thinking of moving anyway…” 

That day, Yumi stepped into the new house, and felt warm, even though the house was located in freakishly empty woods.

“Hey, Mom? Can I invite Emu over tonight? I know it’s kind of a stretch but…” Yumi asked.

“Eh, why not!” Airi said. Yumi didn’t bat an eye, since it was getting late. Yumi ran up to her room opened her phone, and clicked on Emu’s contact (Which was at the time Bread Stealer💥💀😋). 

She called Emu and the conversation went as you would expect it to go. About 30 minutes later, Emu and her mom, Haruka, were on Yumi’s doorstep.

“Thank you for having her over…” Haruka said.

“Of course!” Yumi exclaimed.

 “Your mom’s wild…” Emu said as they walked up the stairs to Yumi’s room. The girls settled into the room and sat on a pillow while they played a little hand game on the table, then noticed the clock being 7:30pm.

“Hey…I’ve got a little idea…” Emu said with a smirk on her face. 

“Lemme guess…go into the forest and come back at 8:00am?” Yumi asked, unimpressed.

“Yeah… That’s oddly specific…how’d you know?” Emu questioned.

“I’ve seen the storyboards,” Yumi answered.

“Wait a sec…OH GOD THE FOURTH WALL! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NOT THE FOURTH WALL, IT’S COMING DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I scream.

“A…anyway…”

 The girls giggled as they tip-toed out the front door in their oddly uncomfortable shoes and Furisodes until they heard some footsteps. 

“…!”

 Yumi and Emu dashed back into the house and Yumi rolled her eyes as Airi stepped into the room with cinnamon rolls. 

“Who wants cinnamon rolls?!” Emu ran back to Yumi’s room and Yumi followed.

“Okay, forget what I said about your mom being wild. Your mom is an absolute angel!!! Emu swooned. 

As they ate the tasty food, Yumi said, “We need to finish these as soon as possible, got it?” 

When they finished, Yumi stared at the clock like she was interrogating it until it was 8:00pm. 

Soon, Yumi turned to the clock and exclaimed, “It’s 8.00! My mom has to be asleep by now!” 

Once again, the girls charged out the door but quietly shut the door so they wouldn’t wake up Airi. 

As they walked into the forest, Yumi noticed it was burnt. Shivering, Yumi asked, “What happened to this place?” 

“Oh! I remember reading about this place somewhere! Apparently, there was a fire 6 months ago and everything was destroyed. Nobody knows the cause…” The gray ash prickled their feet. Suddenly, Emu slipped on something long…and….for a moment…she didn’t get back up.
