Author’s Note: I wrote this just after finishing Percy Jackson and Olympians and before reading Heroes of Olympus and Trials of Apollo so there may be some things that are different in this to those, because I haven’t finished reading the books. Also, this doesn’t really follow any time in the actual timeline. Finally, this uses characters, places, things, and ideas from Rick Riodan’s imagination.
Chapter 1
I snap my rubber band on my wrist in the sweltering hot classroom staring at the clock trying to make out what it says. After a few moments, I read that it is 12:44, one minute ’til I can get out of this classroom.
When the bell rings, I dash out of the classroom into the already packed hallways of my boarding school, The Storm King School. I change schools a lot for various reasons, mainly because I get expelled, not that I try to make trouble. I just do. I also see odd things. Then I lose all the friends I make, because they think I’m weird.
Once in the hall I spot River, my best friend. He’s also my only friend. He is medium height with pale white skin and long-ish dark fluff red hair, the red hair is commented on by light brown eyes that look almost gold sometimes. Being a teenage gay boy, I thought he was one of the most attractive boys ever to walk Earth.
“Hey,” he says into my ear so that I could hear him in the rush of the halls.
“Hi,” I say, looking down at him. I’m really tall, like really tall. Unlike him, I have tan skin, blue eyes, and short brown hair that has been turned almost blonde all the time in the sun. I love being in the sun. I don’t know why; it’s almost like someone is pulling me to it sometimes.
“You have history next, right?” he asks, which is a dumb question, because we have history together and have all year, but I respond anyway.
When we enter Mr. Brunner’s class, for some reason he never really put anything on the walls, just some signs of whatever we were learning at the time. At the moment, we were learning about the Greeks, mainly Greek mythology. I never really liked history, but I loved Mr.Brunner in his wheel chair with his thinning hair and jacket that always smelled like coffee.
“Hello, Oliver,” he says to me, smiling as he wheels to his desk at the front of the room.
“Hello, sir,” I responded as I took my seat next to River at the front of the room.
That day we were focusing on the monsters in Greek Mythology. For some reason, River was making me take notes even though he knew that I had ADHD and dyslexia, so taking notes was torture.
Later that night in my dorm, I was trying to clean up, but really I was just shoving stuff under my bed. There was this girl in the grade above me that was a neat freak and so wanted all the dorms on the hall to be clean. She was also the student advisor so she ran the inspections. I would make my room look clean the night before and then make my bed in the morning and call it good. She never liked me anyway so I didn’t care if she approved of my cleaning job.
Later that night as I sat at my desk pretending to do my homework, I was actually drawing a lion on my desk. As I draw the tip of the tail, someone starts to bang on my door. Thinking it’s the student advisor, I pull my homework over the loin and say they can come in, but it wasn’t her. It was River and he looked scared. “What?” I ask.
“I tell you later, just come with me,” he says urgently. He starts down the hall, so I run after him.
When we get to the end of campus, I start to slow down, panting hard enough for anyone to hear, which was a problem because it was after curfew. I knew that someone was going to hear me so I covered my mouth, buckled over staring up at River, him staring down at me.
“So you’re going to tell me what we’re running from?” I try to say, but it got washed out in the sound of me huffing and puffing.
“No,” he said with a straight face, grabbing my hand and pulling me to the side of the admin building. I see Mr. Bunner sitting in his wheelchair with a worried look on face.
“H-hi?” I say looking at him. I say it as a question but he doesn’t say anything. He just hands me a Band-Aid with small green dots. I look at him in confusion, but all he says is that I know what to do when I need to know.
“Okay, thanks Chiron but can we get moving? They’re going to be here soon,” River said, starting to wheel Mr. Bunner’s wheelchair down the alley.
“Wait… Who’s Chiron?” I ask.
“Me,” Mr. Bunner…Chiron? Anyway, the dude in the wheelchair says.
“Haha very funny. Who actually is he?” I looked back and forth, waiting for one of them to tell me who he was but neither did.
“Oliver, I am Chiron the centaur that trains demigods. You are a demigod,” Chiron tells me in all seriousness.
