Chapter 3
“JAKI!” my dad yells up the stairs to me.
“What?” I ask, walking down the stairs.
“Dinner time.” Honestly, I hate dad’s cooking, but tonight was fine, because I had so many other things on my mind. At the table, my dad had placed my favorite cup with the non-binary coloring.
“So how was your day?” my dad asks I sit in silence thinking.
“Wait what?”
“How was your day?”
“Ohh, good.”
The dinner continued like that until I threw my plate in the sink, ran back up to my room, opened my phone, and saw that I missed a call from May. I click on the call back button. Bing bing bing. May answers after a few seconds.
“Hey!” I say joyfully.
“Hi.” May kind of looks like she has been crying.
“What’s wrong?’ I ask, noticing the sounds of an argument in the background.
“Nothing,” May clearly lies.
“May, what’s up?”
Tears start to roll down May’s face. My heart skips a beat. What is going on with her?
“May, everything okay?” her tears become sobs. I can’t make out her words from her tears, but it sounds like she is saying that her parents are fighting. She has never mentioned that they fight a lot, but May’s reaction tells me they do.
“Ohh, May I am so sorry.”
“It-its f-fine,” May stutters out.
“Do they fight a lot?” Even though I thought that this was true, I just wanted to cheek.
“All the time.” It seems that she is calming down as she starts to wipe her tears away.
“Are you okay?” May smiles and starts to nod, but seeing that I want to know the truth, she shakes her head. She goes on to tell me what’s going on. The next time I check the clock I see that it’s 1:49 am .
“Hey, May, we should probably go to bed,” I say starting to nod off as I speak.
“Yeah, we should,” she yawns. Her yawns are cute, I think, but this time I don’t try to push the thought out.
