Chapter 4: Kalypso
As I walked through this barren town, I noticed a crowded inn. I walked inside to see mainly men drinking and laughing. Not that I was interested in that. I noticed some gamblers playing poker, so I walked over there and asked if I could join. They said yes and I smirked. I am practically a poker master. I put in 40 bucks, knowing that’ll I get it back anyway. They gaped at the amount of money I put in. I sat down and when we were like halfway through, a boy who looked about my age came up and asked if he could join.
I was about to say no, but one of the other people said, “Sure, we’ll deal you in.”
He sat down on the opposite end of the table, and I wasn’t complaining. We continued on, and I was so sure I had the best five-card hand at the table. I had a King-High Flush! I slapped it down, thinking I’d win but then the guy who joined halfway through calmly placed down a whole Royal Flush!
“I believe I won,” he said, collecting the money and smirking at me.
It took all my might to not walk up to him and slap him in the face while he walked off.
He stopped all of a sudden and said, “By the way, my name is Emile.” He showed me his jackpot that I should have gotten as he walks off.
I kept myself in my chair for 3 more seconds and then chased after him. Everyone in this town knows not to mess with me like that, so he’s clearly an outsider. I was about to show him what I’m made of, when I noticed him on a roof. I was about to jump up to him, when he threw down a piece of paper with giant red letters saying wanted. I ripped it out of the air and looked at it. A girl with white hair was in the picture, but it was a bad quality one. I looked down at the reward and my eyes lit up.
It said, “Whoever finds this young woman will get any reward they name.”
I looked back at him and asked him, “Where did you get this?” I wave the sheet at him.
“Where I got it does not matter,” he said. “What does matter is that I have something to ask of you.”
I eyed him suspiciously, “What?”
He smirked, “I was wondering if we could have a little wager. Whoever finds and turns this girl in first, gets to have the other either shoo off, or become their personal servant.”
I was about to say absolutely not, but then he said, “Unless you’re too scared, we can call it off.”
That does it. No way was I going to be called scared. “You’re on,” I said with a confident face and voice.
He won that poker game out of pure luck. He most likely doesn’t even know how to capture someone.
“Excellent. It starts at sunrise tomorrow morning,” he hopped off the roof and into the darkness.
I adjusted my fedora and headed out towards my supplies stash.
