Chapter Two: P.E.
My feet hit the ground in a rhythmic pattern, as I flew down the track. I’ve always been a good runner, except I’ve never gotten into it. Someone tapped me on the shoulder.
“Hey, you’re really fast. Do you run?” I could tell by the tone of voice, it was Cal. I could feel her slowly catching up to me.
“No, I’ve never really gotten into running,” I said.
“Oh,” she said, seeming disappointed.
“Well uh what do you do?” she asked, trying not to seem rude.
“Uh, I sketch, and uh read, and write a little if I’m up for it. I don’t know,” I said. We slowed down a bit when the gym teacher blew the whistle signaling it was time to come in. I felt sort of short on breath. Cal is so nice.
“Cool, I code, and I write, too. Maybe we could work on a story together some time, like, I write it, and you could illustrate. That is uh, if y-you want.”
I thought about the idea. What would we write about? I’m sure she had ideas.
“So uh… What do you like, draw?” she asked, her blonde braid bouncing behind her as we walked back towards the school.
“Uh I draw frogs mostly, but sometimes people, flowers, y’know that kind of stuff.” I thought for a minute. What could I ask her? “Uh what do you code? Sorry I’m not good at small talk. It makes me nervous sometimes,” I said.
Her expression changed, “Sorry if I’m making you feel uncomfortable. I’m not good at small talk either.”
I didn’t mean to make her feel like it was her fault, “Sorry it’s not your fault. I have uh..social anxiety.”
“Oh, ok. Uh, I code small websites. My dad taught me how to code small games a couple of years ago. Its just a little thing I enjoy I guess. I-I uh…can teach you sometime if you want,” she said with a smile.
“I’d like that. D-do you wanna hang out sometime?”
“Uh sure i can uh give you my number if you want.”
Did she just offer to give me her number? DID CALLIE WATTMAN JUST ASK IF I WANTED HER NUMBER!?! I tried to keep it cool, but I was exploding on the inside. My face felt red hot.
“I-uh…uhm…sure!”
She seemed a little red herself. “Uh…ok meet me at lunch then,” she said with an awkward smile.

A note from the author: Hey! Sorry this chapter took so long. I’m in the middle of planning something new. It’s going to be sort of different, because I’m trying something out of my comfort zone. Thanks so much for all the support! ~Julia
