Welcome back! This week’s suggestion is the musical/movie “Into the Woods” (Are you seeing a pattern here?). This musical tells the story of different characters going into the woods to achieve a goal. The main story is the story of a baker and his wife, who more than anything, want a child. One day, their next door neighbor, a witch, visits them, and gives them horrible news. The baker and his wife, played by James Corden and Emily Blunt, then learn the baker’s father stole from the witch’s garden years ago, getting greens for his pregnant wife. But once, he got caught. The witch made a deal with the baker’s father, saying he could get away, but she would take the child once it was born. We learn the baker has… a sister. The baker’s family tree was cursed, then, so it would always be bare. To break the curse, they have to go into the woods, and find five items. The cloak, as red as blood, the hair, as yellow as corn. We also have a poor girl named Cinderella, played by Anna Kendrick. I’m sure you’re familiar with this tale. I don’t need to explain much, but it is a bit different from the Disney version you’re familiar with. In this version, the ball goes on for three days, and there is a great willow tree she visits to speak with her late mother. In this version, her mother gives her a gorgeous golden dress, not a blue one from a fairy godmother. The prince falls for her, as he does in the fairytale, but she eventually runs off. Now I won’t go over the entire plot, or we’d be here all day. So I’ll just leave it here… Be careful of the wicked witch.
