Chapter 1
009 Hours
When Buck did not return from his walk, his wife went looking for him. She wished she had not. She saw the body and ran back to the village as fast as she could. The small population of the village crowded around his body. A young boy screamed and buried his face in his mom’s dress. When a young boy, no older than 12 stepped out and inspected the body, nobody noticed him. And nobody noticed the skeletal figure with antlers creeping into the woods as a mist reached out and enveloped it and the creature disappeared.
And when the population of the village went back to their homes, nobody saw the body of Buck twitch and stagger into the woods after the creature.
When the townsfolk came back to the site of Buck’s body, they were horrified to see that the body was gone. They whirled around, looking at their neighbors, each suspecting each other of stealing the body. Again, nobody noticed as the boy crouched, pulled out a notepad and picked up a shard of bone, no bigger than a thimble, and pocketed it. As a mist rolled in, everyone began to head back to their homes.
An old man falls behind and is enveloped by the mist. A scream echoes out. This time, it is heard by some townspeople. They rush out to see a figure with a skeleton’s body and an elk skull on top of it attacking the man. When seen, the thing drops the man and runs off into the woods. A person screams and yells that the thing was wearing Buck’s clothes. The boy walks calmly over and picks up a scrap of clothing, pockets it, and walks off.
