“Hamilton feels every bit as fresh, invigorating, intoxicating, and revolutionary as it did when it premiered five years ago.” -Rotten Tomatoes
Trigger Warning: Cursing, suggestive themes, death
This week’s suggestion for what to watch when at home or on the weekend is Hamilton: An American Musical starring Lin Manuel Miranda, Philippa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr, Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs, and more! This play is on Disney+ and is set in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Hamilton, lasting at two and a half hours, this play is about the life of one of our founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, also the person on the $10 bill! The writer of this play, Lin Manuel Miranda, who stars as the main character, Alexander Hamilton, wrote this play in the span of 7 years. This follows his story of triumph, and tragedy. Alexander Hamilton helped make an utterly astounding debt plan, was the country’s first secretary of treasury, wrote essays against slavery, helped and fought in the Revolutionary War, and even though he died before the age of 60, he wrote thousands of pages of writing that took his wife decades to sort out after his death. This musical has a total of 48 songs, all exceedingly catchy and something definitely worth listening to. This story captures Alexander Hamilton’s glory, mistakes, pride, and also has quite solemn moments. Now even though this was set hundreds of years ago, sometimes the songs characters sing may help us relate to the situation in our own way, such as feeling unsatisfied, regret, sadness after a death, and maybe even a want for everyone to have rights. I think every bit of Hamilton is worth watching. It’s truly an amazing and phenomenal play that left me incredulous. I hope you watch this and enjoy it as much as I did!
