FORT COLLINS- Rosie, Kristina, and I interviewed Mrs. Perez, a 6th grade math teacher at Webber, asking why she wanted to do her job and things her students do that are good in her classroom. Here is what she said!
“I chose to become a teacher because I’ve always had a passion for learning and helping others grow. There’s something incredibly meaningful about being part of a student’s journey — watching that moment when something “clicks,” or seeing someone gain confidence in themselves. Every day is different, and every student brings something special to the classroom. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.”
“Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing students do some really inspiring things, from helping classmates who were struggling to showing kindness when it mattered most. Sometimes, the most powerful moments are quiet ones, like when a student chooses to stay focused, apologizes sincerely, or supports a friend. One of the most rewarding things has been seeing students change their views on math. Some who used to hate it have come to love it once they started to feel more confident and realized they could do it. Those are the things that stay with me.”
We also asked students who have or have had Mrs. Perez what she does amazing at! Here is what they said.
“She always tries to help students when they’re stuck. She also helps a lot of people be positive. If you have a bad day, she’ll always cheer you up! She always helped me personally when I did not understand something. She always helped me and the class,” explained 7th grader Averie.
We also asked students what Mrs. Perez does that helps you learn and understand.
One 6th grader named Sadie shared, “Not just giving an overview on what you’re doing, she goes in depth on how to do it when we go up to the board. Also, she does the board in groups. It helps me get others’ perspectives and understand them better so I can see other ways.”
