FORT COLLINS- Mr. Davis, our beloved principal, knew pretty early on that he wanted to be a teacher and a coach. He played college and high school football and went to a college for teachers. He got his degree and became a teacher. He taught an enjoyable 13 years before moving to Blevins Middle School as an assistant principal for six years. After that, Mr. Davis worked in the central office for Poudre School District for six years. After that, Mr. Davis was lucky to be offered his current job as the proud Webber Panther principal.
Since 2017, Mr. Davis has been making a positive change in the community by uniting families at Webber Middle School. Mr. Davis has had three different offices in his time at Webber. Mr. Davis is very grateful for his six assistant principals, past and current.
Once Mr. Davis retires, he might want to go back to coaching football or track, mentor new principals, go fishing, evaluate student teachers, work at Costco, or do more sports. He said he will just be happy to be on his own time and not have to worry about the school schedule, as I’m sure many of us agree. Mr. Davis’s favorite time of school day though is when kids are leaving and doing clubs so that he can talk to them.
One of Mr. Davis’s favorite things about working with kids is, “Watching them walk in as 6th graders, pretty unsure of the middle school world and who they are and where they’re headed. Watching them each year kind of figure out a little bit more about what they want to do and what they want to be and then leaving here and watching them going to Rocky, and just growing up, maturing and being ready to graduate from high school. It’s a pretty cool feeling to see that.”
He also reflected on his feelings for how students treat each other at Webber.
“I’m very proud of how kids treat each other. I was at a unified game and the way that the peer helpers just helped our students with disabilities play and have access to that basketball game has been pretty cool.”
Mr. Davis is also very proud of how Webber has lots of activities and how much students have been so engaged in activities and classes. He requested though that students please try to make it less stressful to be a crossing guard! Mr. Davis also reflected on sharing his accomplishments with his parents.
“I feel so proud that before my mom died, my mom and my dad got to come down. I walked them around the building to show my mom, Hey, I am a principal now.”
Mr. Davis shared that he is going to miss kids the most. He really loves that he can be a steady adult in kids’ lives. His top three memories at Webber are: 1) when he did the walk of champions in his first year at Webber like Mr. Watkins (the new, incoming principal), 2) when he has been at all of our sports, science, and math competitions and seeing students win and feel so proud. It’s like we are all the Panthers, and 3) Mr. Davis is overall very proud of the work that he has done to make Webber a better place.
Our beloved principal also shared some final pieces of advice, “For Mr. Watkins, get out of the office and be visible. Make sure that you learn as many kids’ names as you can, call ’em by their name, talk to them and check in with them… For the future sixth graders, it’s okay to be nervous and just trust the adults and can talk to them, also be patient. Your locker, your friends, your schedule will all work out but take your time and be patient.”
During his last moments at Webber, let’s all help to make it special.
“Make it a great day or not…… The choice is yours,” the great Mr. Davis.
