Chapter 6
Sleeping on the USS Indianapolis
The USS Indianapolis
July 29, 1945
23:50 hours (11:50pm)
Tom and Steve, who were sharing the bunk bed they were dozing off in, were happily snoring away, having sweet dreams all the while.
‘Zzzzzzz’
‘Zzzzzzz’
While the two were enjoying it now, they wouldn’t be for very much longer.
–
Meanwhile, a Japanese Submarine was prowling the dark waters underneath the Indy. Inside, the men aboard were preparing to launch their two torpedoes to hit and sink the ship above them.
The men spoke their typical Japanese language, and all dreamt of seeing the Indy go down, knowing that the cruel American men surely would die.
“魚雷の準備をしましょう !” The Japanese commander shouted sternly. (If you can’t read this, then it means “Ready the torpedoes!”)
The workers obeyed their Captain and pushed the torpedoes into their own separate cannons, after having cleaned the disgusting gunpowder inside the pipe.
They closed the hatch, and then pushed the button on the controller that signaled that both the torpedoes were both to hit the ship above them, and not their sub, because that would not be good. (To them, anyways).
“準備ができています。標的。火!” (“Ready. Aim. Fire!”)
POW! SWOOOP.
The torpedoes hurried out of the submarine, and glided through the deep, dark water. And then,
KABOOM!!!
Tom and Steve, who were happily sleeping, flew out of their bunks.
“Ouch!” they said both at the same time as the two hit the hard, cold ground below them.
After the two sat up, Steve tried to say, but was interrupted by the other torpedo, “What the hel–”
KABOOM!!!
After recovering from both explosions, Tom said in shock, “T-They w-were… (He panted to catch his breath, as you can imagine he was scared, and you would probably pant with fear if this were you, too) torpedoes,” he stammered with fright, as it was the scariest jumpscare of his life. (Aside from the time he stepped into a battalion of Army Ants, and they jumped up, and bit his left eye, and almost popped it out, and afterwards, it left a bloodshot-like looking scar). But you get it, it was the scariest jumpscare of his life.
“Pardon-” Steve tried to say, but was interrupted by one of the other passengers running through the hallway.
“We have to leave this ship!” He shouted to them. He was soaking wet, as if he had just taken a shower. A very cold shower.
“What?!” Tom and Steve said both at the same time, which was not unusual in this type of situation.
“What the heck are you talking about?!” Steve questioned.
“This boat is going down! Save yourselves!” Then the man left their doorway, and hurried himself out of there.
“Is he crazy?” Steve wondered aloud.
Tom shook his head as he said this: “I don’t think he is. I think he’s serious. Dead serious, according to the expression on his face, and how soaking wet he was.”
“So, you think–”
“Yes.” Tom said. “It is. This boat is sinking, and we have to get out of here now…”
